Bob Lobel: It's NFL Coaching Vacancy & Presidential Primary Season

By Bob Lobel (@boblobel)

Dumb and dumber or smart and smarter?

The season to be jolly has blown by and now it's time to hunker down and get in NFL playoff mode. Seriously, if there is another voice on the radio that sounds like he is between 15 and 20, and a self-proclaimed prophet, put on some music.

What is the deal with picking winners based on anything from backup quarterbacks, to injured lineman and poor coaches, to just about everything else? Yes, this is a really good time to get into the winners and losers, but maybe a better strategy is to keep your opinion between you and your bookie.

Plus, all the testosterone on the radio can be directed toward the future of coaches. Lots of openings coming up, so let me ask, should he ever leave, who would you want to replace Belichick?

Cowher, Gruden. Saben, Urban Meyer, or the rest of a whole class of top-notch football guys?

I say Saben.

So, if I want to hire Saben, what do I have to do to make sure I can and will get him?

Hire him now, right? What does that do to Belichick, make him coach emeritus?

I think on this one, unless Belichick says "thanks for the memories Tom," this team is stuck until he decides when he is leaving and who will take his place.

You have to believe that is the way it will go down.

Not only will he let someone else buy the groceries, he will pick the next cook too. These are the weeks of speculation and humiliation.  Go ahead and pick, and make sure you broadcast the fact that you knew all along.

For my two cents, since the primaries are looming, the timing may just be perfect. I predict with swagger and confidence that Bernie Sanders will not be the new Patriots head coach! Add Hillary to that list with Chris Christie. You must see where I'm going here.

He has been sighted in the Kraft box. None of the others have been. Yes, it’s the Don. Trump becomes Belichick's replacement. He was an owner, and probably knows more about football than most of the other owners and some of the coaches.

Some team may actually take a shot with him. He won't lack confidence and it’s a perfect fit.

The drama and debates are playing out, and when sportswriters/casters become the people to ask the questions for the final debates, it will be obvious to one and all where it's going.
