MIAA Football Top 25: Week 5

BC High continues to get the job done on the ground, led by Harvard commit Danny Abraham (pictured), quarterback Will Bowen, and a loaded offensive line.
Our weekly rankings of the best teams in the state, as selected by our panel of staff writers and correspondents. (Updated 10/2)

1. Everett (3-0; Last Week – 1 ) After an idle week, the Crimson Tide will prepare for a road trip to Cawley Stadium and an exciting matchup against high-scoring Lowell.

2. BC High (4-0; Last Week – 2 ) The Eagles handled another tough matchup on a loaded schedule, running past Brockton for a 42-18 win at Harvard Stadium last Friday.

3. Central Catholic (4-0; Last Week – 3) With a convincing 44-14 win at Billerica, the Raiders continued to showcase their talent on both sides of the ball.

4. St. John's (Shrewsbury) (4-0; Last Week – 4) This Pioneer offense is electric with Steven Bucciagla at quarterback, and he tossed four more touchdowns in a 55-21 win over Wachusett on Friday.

5. King Philip (4-0; Last Week – 5) They fell behind 10-0 early to Mansfield last Thursday, but the Warriors rallied for a 28-10 win thanks to more heroics from Yale-bound linebacker Shane Frommer.

6. Lexington (4-0; Last Week – 7) Sal Frelick paced the Minutemen over 40 points for the third time this season, as they handled Winchester in a Middlesex League contest on Thursday.

7. Marshfield (3-1; Last Week – 8) The Rams brought another talented South Shore squad to its knees with a 35-6 win over Nauset at home.

8. St. John's Prep (2-2; Last Week – 9) Eagles bounced back from a loss to Everett with a 35-0 drubbing of league rival Malden Catholic.

9. Bridgewater-Raynham (3-1; Last Week – 10) Bryce Shaw carried the Trojans to a 13-0 win at Chelmsford with hard-nosed play on both sides of the ball. Dan Buron’s squad will become even more dangerous with running back Devante Greaves expected to return for next week’s tilt at Dartmouth.

10. Duxbury (3-1; Last Week – 11) Quarterback John Roberts led the Dragons to an early lead as they coasted to a 35-6 victory over Plymouth North on Friday.

11. North Attleborough (3-1; Last Week – 12) Not really tested over the last few weeks, Chad Peterson and the Red Rocketeers will look to ramp up in October with tough games against Foxborough and Stoughton on deck.

12. Xaverian (1-3; Last Week – 6) This prestigious program still garners plenty of respect based on name, but after a 13-12 loss to struggling Catholic Memorial to open league play, that’s just about all Xaverian has right now.

13. Lynn Classical (4-0; Last Week – 14) Defense won the day for the Rams in a thrilling 21-19 win at Gloucseter. New head coach Brian Vaughan has this group rolling ahead of another huge tilt at Danvers next Friday.

14. Marblehead (4-0; Last Week – 16) Without star linebacker Aidan Gillis, the Magicians defense hardly gave up anything, and they literally gave up nothing in a 30-0 win over Beverly as Gillis returned from illness.

15. Reading (3-1; Last Week – 15) Rockets barely hung on for a 29-24 victory against Middlesex League rival Belmont on Friday.

16. North Andover (4-0; Last Week – 17) True challengers in the Merrimack Valley Conference, the Scarlet Knights will look to upend another incumbent power when they host Billerica next Friday.

17. Catholic Memorial (2-2; Last Week – NA) After struggling badly in consecutive losses to open the season, the Knights defense came up clutch in wins over Brockton and Xaverian.

18. Tewksbury (3-1; Last Week – 18) Redmen bounced back from their first regular season loss in some time with a 43-13 win at Dracut.

19. Lincoln-Sudbury (4-0; Last Week – 20) Behind an elite rushing attack, the Warriors cruised to another victory, this time pasting Westford Academy by a final of 55-7.

20. St. Mary’s (Lynn) (4-0; Last Week – 23) Calvin Johnson continued to grab headlines with four more touchdowns in a 48-8 drubbing of rival Cardinal Spellman.

21. Falmouth (3-1; Last Week – 21) The Clippers handled Sandwich quite easily, but face another tough test next week against undefeated Dennis-Yarmouth.

22. Mashpee (4-0; Last Week – 22) The Falcons pulled away late against Cohasset last week, and will hit the road to battle Hull this Friday night.

23. Mansfield (3-1; Last Week – 19) The Hornets couldn’t quite hang on in a Thursday night showdown against King Philip, but showed their potential in a narrow loss.

24. Natick (4-0; Last Week – NA) With 35 points in consecutive wins over Milton and Norwood, it appears that the Redhawks have an excellent offense to compliment their speedy defense.

25. Nashoba (4-0; Last Week – 25) It wasn’t pretty, but the Chieftans were able to grind out a 14-13 win at Marlborough on Friday.

Last 10 Out:  Shrewsbury (4-0),  Holliston (3-1), Andover (2-2), Danvers (4-0), Dennis-Yarmouth (4-0), Foxborough (3-1), Lowell (4-0), Billerica (2-2), Middleborough (4-0), Shepherd Hill (3-1)
