Unsigned Hype: Massachusetts Football Recruits Still Looking for a Home

SuiteSports All-State receiver Cole Drugotch from St. John's (Shrewsbury) is still looking for a place to play college ball

National Signing Day has come and gone, but that doesn't mean football recruiting is done for the Class of 2018. Even with the new early signing period that took place in December, last week's National Signing Day is just the beginning for many of the state's top players, who are still looking to take their games to the next level.

There are literally dozens of Massachusetts football prospects still available, but here are some of the best ones still looking for a college team.

Brighton

William Jean, ATH- Highlights

A quintessential "team guy," Jean served as a senior captain, and filled in wherever he was needed for the Bengals. Throughout 2017, Jean showcased play making ability as both a deep threat out wide, and as a dynamic quarterback as well. Still looking for a college home, Jean also has the athleticism and toughness to play a variety of spots in the defensive backfield.

Dennis-Yarmouth

Sam Kenny, DL - Highlights

Kenny emerged as one of the state's best run defending ends during D-Y's state championship run, and was equally vital as a strong punch right tackle on offense. Quick off the ball and decisive, Kenny seems to have a promising future whichever side of the ball he ends up.

Doherty

Evan Brunelle, WR/DB, Doherty- Highlights

A physical receiver with soft hands and great concentration, Brunelle was Doherty's most consistent outside weapon. The physical senior also proved his worth as a blocker for the Highlander ground game, and had a nose for the football on the defensive side as well. With an offer in hand from Wagner, and a recent visit to Bentley, Brunelle will likely be choosing between several FCS and D2 schools in the Northeast.

Everett

Joshua Miller, DE/LB- Highlights

An unsung hero of Everett's dominant defense the past two years, Miller excelled as a stand-up end, and worked inside as a true linebacker as well. Equally comfortable setting the edge, rushing the passer and roaming sideline to sideline, the versatile senior is deciding between AIC, Franklin Pierce, Southern Connecticut and Concordia.

Millis

Bryce Latosek, QB- Highlights

With a quick release and off-the-charts intangibles, Latosek led the Mohawks to back-to-back state championships in his two seasons as a starter. Hardly just a "game manager," Millis transitioned to a wide-open attack with Latosek pulling the trigger. The senior recently visited Endicott, and would seem like a steal for any local D2 or D3 team.

Nantucket

Ampherney Garcia, DL- Highlights

A natural defensive tackle, with the strength to hold up inside, and the quickness off the ball and laterally to play end in certain schemes. Garcia's motor and play recognition made him a nightmare of opposing lines and backfields during 2017. At 6-foot-2 and over 275 lbs, he's already physically prepared to play at the college level, it's just a matter of where.

Mark Hamilton, OL/DL- Highlights

A two-way lineman, who can play pretty much wherever you need him, seeing action at defensive tackle, defensive end, offensive tackle and offensive guard, Hamilton's quickness off the ball in both trenches is what makes him special. Though he'll need to add bulk to his 240 lb frame, there's no doubt that the athleticism, strength and instincts are there. Though he excelled mostly as a defensive end and left offensive tackle at Nantucket, his quick feet and ability to pull may lead to him transitioning to the interior of the offensive line at the next level.

St. John's (Shrewsbury)

Cole Drugotch, WR- Highlights

A physical receiver at 6-foot and 185 lbs, Drugotch was perhaps the most lethal weapon in the record-setting Pioneer attack. A crisp route runner, with enough speed to get over the top, Drugotch also excelled high-pointing the ball downfield. With the ability to run every route in the book, and some elusiveness after the catch, Drugotch is a versatile receiver who should find a home soon.

Ian Schade, OL/DL- Highlights

Much like Miller at Everett, Schade was often overlooked on a loaded St. John's title team, but the senior two-way starter was instrumental in the Pioneers' undefeated run. A physical defensive end who excelled at setting the edge, and containing opponents' read-option game, Schade also provided the Pioneers with a pass rush boost, especially in the Central Mass title game against Shrewsbury, and state championship game against North Attleboro. Offensively, Schade was at his best when using his quickness to pull, get to the second level, or simply seal an interior defender inside so that St. John's could work to the perimeter.

St. Peter-Marian

Matt Dumphy, ATH- Highlights

A threat to score every time he touched the ball, Dumphy was one of the state's most versatile weapons, scoring out of the backfield, in the slot, out wide, and on kick and punt returns. With some of the quickest feet in the Commonwealth, unreal field vision and ridiculous quickness in and out of his breaks, Dumphy projects as a dangerous "space player" at the next level.

Sutton

Matt Brooks, OL/DL- Highlights

Undersized, but full of fight at 5-foot-11, 240 lbs,, Brooks plays with great pad level, energy and emotion on both sides of the ball. Probably an offensive guard at the next level, the Sutton senior is a block finisher, outstanding in space, and quick enough to pick off linebackers and DBs that venture up near the line of scrimmage. With visits to Wagner, St. Lawrence and WPI under his belt, Brooks certainly has some options.
