MIAA Baseball: Bryan Woelfel is SuiteSports' 2018 Super Eight MVP

By Matt Feld (@Mattyfeld612)

After an exciting MIAA Division 1A "Super Eight" Tournament, Suite Sports is excited to announce Franklin right-handed pitcher Bryan Woelfel as our 2018 Super Eight Most Valuable Player.

Woelfel was sensational serving as Franklin’s closer and number two-starter throughout the tournament. Over four appearances, the right-hander went 3-0 with a 2.14 ERA.

Woelfel kept hitters off balance with the ability to spot up fastballs that carried significant run on both sides of the plate. He showcased a funky side-arm delivery that made his slider devastating for right-handed hitters.

To begin the tournament, Woelfel relieved Jake Noviello and fired three innings of relief to lead Franklin to an opening round win over Wachusett.

Three days later and it was Woelfel’s turn to start on the mound. He did not disappoint putting up four consecutive zeros as part of a seven inning, two earned run effort versus St. John’s Prep that resulted in a victory.

It was over his final two outings, however, where Woelfel truly left his mark on this year’s Super Eight.

Coming out of the bullpen in the Super Eight Semifinals versus Central Catholic, Woelfel fired four innings of one run baseball. In the bottom of the tenth, with Franklin leading by a run and two men on, Woelfel generated a full-count strikeout to send Franklin to the Super Eight Final.

Then three days later off a 71-pitch outing, Woelfel turned in a terrific performance as Franklin’s starting pitcher for the championship game. Outside of allowing one earned run in the fourth inning, Woelfel was spotless surrendering just six hits and striking out seven while throwing 124 pitches before turning it over to Noviello to close out Franklin’s Super Eight title.

For the tournament, Woelfel finished with victories over the No. 2 seed Wachusett, three seed St. John's Prep, and No. 4 seed Central Catholic.
