Senior Athletes Forced To Look Ahead

State championship celebrations will not come this spring.

By Matt Feld (@Mattyfeld612)

Just over two months ago, March 16th was still a day spring athletes had circled on their calendars. Now April 21st is one they will forever try and erase from their memories.

On Tuesday afternoon, Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker announced that schools - both public and private - would remain closed through the end of the school year as the state continues to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. While the MIAA has yet to formally release a statement, school closures present an end to the spring sports season before it even begins.

MIAA Baseball: Final Top 25 Poll of 2018

By Matt Feld (@Mattyfeld612)

To cap off our content for the 2018 MIAA Baseball season, SuiteSports is ready to release its final Top 25 Poll.

There is little drama when it comes to number one, while North Attleboro, Austin Prep, Archbishop Williams, and Needham all finish in the top 15 behind their state championship runs.

Here is our final top 25 poll for the 2018 MIAA Baseball Season as chosen by our panel of writers, correspondents, and editors.

1. Franklin (21-5): Franklin went from being the last team voted into Super Eight to taking home the tournament's title as a seven seed. Staff aces Jake Noviello and Bryan Woelfel graduate, but with Alex Haba and Jake Macchi back in the fold the Panthers should compete once again in 2019.

Archbishop Williams Walks-Off With Division 4 State Championship

By Matt Feld (@Mattyfeld612)

Worcester, Mass. – One year after falling short, David Ryan made sure Archbishop Williams finished the job.

Two innings after tying the game with a two-out RBI single, Ryan grounded the walk-off single through the drawn in infield as Archbishop Williams won the Division 4 State Championship with a 4-3, nine-inning win over Oxford on Saturday afternoon at Holy Cross.

It is the first baseball state championship for Archbishop Williams since 1995. The Bishops (18-9), who entered the Div. 4 South tournament as the twelfth seed, won three of their seven tournament games in extra innings en route to the title.

St. Peter-Marian Storms Back to Solidify Div. 1 State Final Berth

By John McGuirk (@Patsfan1313)

Westfield, Mass. - You could say history was on its side considering playing in the Division 1 baseball state semifinals is considered old hat for St. Peter-Marian. The Guardians have trekked down the road before, winning a sectional championship three times over the last four years.

The Guardians opponent on Tuesday afternoon, Longmeadow, was a newbie to the big dance. The Lancers are not entrenched in the same kind of baseball tradition, much-like their counterparts. Reaching the playoffs for the first time in seven years, Longmeadow made the most of it after winning its first Western Mass. title on Saturday.

Early on, Longmeadow showed no trepidation  jumping out to an early three run lead. But mid-way through, the tide turned as St. Peter-Marian plated four runs in the fourth and added two more the following frame to secure a 6-3 win over Longmeadow at Bud and Jim Hagen Field on the campus of Westfield State University.

Burns Powers Austin Prep to First State Final Appearance

By Matt Feld (@Mattyfeld612)

Lynn, Mass. – One season after coming up a game short, Austin Prep will play for a state championship.

Peter Burns drilled a two-run home run while Colin Jaena tossed a complete game to lead Austin Prep to a 5-3 win over Dedham in the Div. 3 State Semifinals on Tuesday night at Fraser Field in Lynn.

The Cougars (23-2) will make their first state championship appearance in school history on Saturday versus defending Division 1 champion Taconic.

MIAA Baseball: Bryan Woelfel is SuiteSports' 2018 Super Eight MVP

By Matt Feld (@Mattyfeld612)

After an exciting MIAA Division 1A "Super Eight" Tournament, Suite Sports is excited to announce Franklin right-handed pitcher Bryan Woelfel as our 2018 Super Eight Most Valuable Player.

Woelfel was sensational serving as Franklin’s closer and number two-starter throughout the tournament. Over four appearances, the right-hander went 3-0 with a 2.14 ERA.

Woelfel kept hitters off balance with the ability to spot up fastballs that carried significant run on both sides of the plate. He showcased a funky side-arm delivery that made his slider devastating for right-handed hitters.

MIAA Baseball: Super Eight Finals Primer and Pick

By Matt Feld (@Mattyfeld612)

A little over two weeks after the Super Eight field was announced, the Super Eight Final is set to take place on Monday night at Campanelli Stadium. In a rematch of Thursday night's winner's bracket semifinal, No. 7 Franklin (20-5, 3-0) will take No. 4 Central Catholic (18-6, 3-1).

After trailing by a run for most of the night Thursday, Franklin rallied for a run with two outs in the ninth before scoring two in the tenth to give themselves the upper hand in this year's Super Eight Final. In order for Central Catholic to take home its first Super Eight crown it will need to defeat Franklin twice, while the Panthers can lock up a championship with a win on Monday night.

Longmeadow Needs Just One to Advance to Sectional Final, End Magical Pittsfield Run

By John McGuirk (@PatsFan1313)

AMHERST, Mass. - Since mid-April every game has played out like a tournament showdown for Pittsfield. Following a close one run defeat versus St. Peter-Marian back on April 18th, the Generals were teetering on the edge of postseason elimination.

However, since that loss to the Guardians, Pittsfield has embarked on a remarkable reversal of fortune.

Facing No. 3 Longmeadow on a breezy, partly cloudy afternoon at UMass' Earl Lorden Field, a new lease on life had Pittsfield riding a wave of momentum. But the Generals' late magical run came to a sudden halt as Longmeadow plated a solo run in the third inning and made it stand to defeat Pittsfield, 1-0.

Longmeadow (15-7) will play in its first sectional final here on Saturday against No. 4 Pope Francis at 4 p.m. The Cardinals (15-7) fell to the Lancers twice during the regular season.

"These kids have been working hard all year," said Longmeadow coach Michael Athas, a former UMass shortstop. "To be able to just buckle down and make some big plays is what this game came down to. If we didn't make one or two of those plays (Pittsfield) could have broken it out. We talk about playing with mental toughness all of the time."

Longmeadow junior pitcher Michael Carterud was solid throughout, improving his record to 5-1. The right-hander was around the plate from the outset with a mix of fastballs and off-speed deliveries.

"Mike was in the mode today," Athas said. "He had all his pitches working for strikes. He is just a gamer for us and nothing seems to phase him."

On three different occasions the Generals had runners on base only to see those opportunities squandered.

In the second inning, Hunter Potash led off by reaching second on a throwing miscue only to be picked-off by Carterud. One inning later, Noah Santos opened by lining an opposite field double into right, but a Ryan LaPierre grounder resulted in Santos being tagged out after a brief rundown.

In the Generals' sixth, Joe Traversa was hit by a pitch to begin the frame. Moments later, however, the junior was thrown out by Lancers’ catcher Zach Wright on an attempted steal.

"Unfortunately we shot ourselves in the foot a little bit," Pittsfield coach Seamus Morrison said. "We had bad base running pretty-much the entire game. It ended up being the difference. In a close game like this you have to make all the plays. Today we didn't do that."

Carterud went the distance, allowing five hits, striking out one and walking two.

"I was able to hit my spots today," Carterud said. "I am always able to trust my team in the field to make the plays. My objective was to get ahead of their hitters as much as possible. Them running into a couple of outs today really helped me out a lot."

After Longmeadow went ahead in the bottom of the third, Pittsfield had a golden opportunity to make some noise in its half of the fourth.

Singles by Ian Benoit and Marco DiNicola got things started. A sacrifice bunt by Potash advanced both runners into scoring position. Jon Halse followed with a walk to load the bases. Hayden Harrington proceeded by banging a grounder to second baseman Pat Philbin. The junior threw to second for the force out but shortstop Michael Barrett's throw to first was a tad late allowing Benoit to score. The umpires ruled, however, that Halse made an illegal slide towards Barrett resulting in a double play and taking the run off the board.

Longmeadow left the bases loaded in the second with nothing to show for it, but came back one inning later to take the lead. Senior Tyler Achatz began the inning by lining an opposite field triple into right field. Two batters later, Carterud ripped a single into right, putting Longmeadow ahead 1-0. Pittsfield lefty pitcher Carter Matthews managed to keep it a one run deficit by retiring Barrett and Wright in succession.

"Carter pitched great," said Morrison, his team finishing at 13-10. "They got that one run and that was it. He kept us in it and that's all you can ask for. But if you don't score you don't win. We didn't start the year out particularly well after going 3-7. But we did expect to be here. We knew the type of talent we had on this club. It took us a little bit to get going and then we started to get hot. Unfortunately we were a little flat today."

Franklin Goes Extra Mile to Edge Central Catholic and Advance to Super Eight Final

By Matt Feld (@Mattyfeld612)

Brockton, Mass. -- A little over 10 days ago, Franklin coach Zach Brown sat in the corner of an MIAA conference room sweating it out as his team became the last one chosen to play in the Super Eight tournament. Fast forward to late Thursday night, and Brown was hugging his assistant coaches as the Panthers solidified a spot in the Super Eight final.

With Franklin leading by a run, and the game-tying and winning runs on base, Panthers' reliever Bryan Woelfel reared back and threw a 3-2 fastball on the outside corner for strike three to give No. 7 Franklin a 6-5 win over No. 4 Central Catholic at Campanelli Stadium.

Central Catholic will now play BC High on Saturday at 1 p.m. for the right to take on Franklin in the championship.

Brockton, Mass. – One week after throwing seven shutout innings, Mike Vasil managed to be better.

On Thursday afternoon, Vasil fired a complete game shutout, striking out 13 and throwing 30 of 33 first pitch strikes as No. 1 BC High defeated eight-seeded Walpole, 9-0, to advance to the Super Eight Semifinal at Campanelli Stadium.

BC High (18-6) will face Central Catholic on Saturday at 1 p.m. for the right to play Franklin in the Super Eight Final.

In all, Vasil threw 109 pitches featuring predominantly a two-seam fastball that hovered between 91 and 92 miles per hour and a sharp breaking ball. Vasil has struck out 26 hitters and fallen behind in the count 2-0 twice over his last 17 innings.

MIAA Baseball: With Just Four Teams Remaining, our Preview and Picks for Today's Super Eight Games

By Matt Feld (@Mattyfeld612)

There are only four teams remaining in this year’s Super Eight tournament, and after Thursday afternoon that number will dwindle even further.

First up, No. 8 Walpole looks to win its third straight elimination game when they take on No. 1 BC High. The two met up in the opening round of the tournament with the Eagles coming away with a 4-0 win.

In the night-cap, seventh seeded Franklin faces off against No. 4 Central Catholic with a berth in the Super Eight Final on the line. The Panthers and Raiders have each scored a combined 15 runs over their first two games. While the winner will advance to the tournament's championship game, the loser will fall into the one-loss bracket and face the Walpole vs. BC High winner.

Here are our preview and predictions for today’s two Super Eight games down in Brockton.
