Archbishop Williams Walks-Off With Division 4 State Championship

Worcester, Mass. – One year after falling short, David Ryan made sure Archbishop Williams finished the job.

Two innings after tying the game with a two-out RBI single, Ryan grounded the walk-off single through the drawn in infield as Archbishop Williams won the Division 4 State Championship with a 4-3, nine-inning win over Oxford on Saturday afternoon at Holy Cross.

It is the first baseball state championship for Archbishop Williams since 1995. The Bishops (18-9), who entered the Div. 4 South tournament as the twelfth seed, won three of their seven tournament games in extra innings en route to the title.

On Wednesday afternoon, Archbishop Williams advanced to the Div. 4 State Final with an 11-5 win over Hamilton-Wenham.

Dingle Propels Archbishop Williams to D3 Girls' Hoops Crown

Springfield, Mass. - Archbishop Williams head coach Matt Mahoney prefaced what was a bold declaration with some of his trademark modesty, warning reporters that he might seem a little biased, and might be a little too in the now. Forgive him, for he just watched his star point guard take the Bishops to yet another MIAA Division 3 state title, their fourth in six seasons.

But this is also one of the most dominant programs in Massachusetts over the last decade, regularly making deep March runs in the state tournament, and churning out Division 1-caliber talents over and over, regularly sending players to schools from the Big Ten to the ACC to the Big East and a slew in between.

And so, there's considerable magnitude to consider.

“She may be the best,” he said of senior Asiah Dingle (20 points, eight assists, seven rebounds, five steals), after she dominated Hampshire Regional every which way, filling up the stat sheet en route to a 77-42 win at Blake Arena on the campus of Springfield College.

Newton South Girls' Hoops Captures Tournament Title against Archbishop Williams

Woburn, Mass. - In one of the best girls' high school basketball games played this season in Massachusetts, Archbishop Williams (17-3) and the Newton South Lions (19-1) tangled in the championship game of the Comast-D’Vinci Tournament held at Woburn High School.

According to Danny Ventura of The Boston Herald, the Bishops sit at #7 and the Lions hold down the #9 spot in the paper's latest power rankings. Neither team disappointed Monday, in a 56-53 game taken by the Lions.

Bishops guard Asiah Dingle (Kent State ’22 commit) and Lions guard Veronica Burton (Northwestern ’22) have been both friends and adversaries on the basketball court since the age of nine.

“It is a good opportunity to play against someone that is actually as good as you,” Dingle said of competing against Burton. “It’s fun to see if we can take each other out of the game, both mentally and defensively, but also match each other offensively.”

Austin Prep Hockey Bests Archbishop Williams in Early Season Test

Braintree, Mass. - Just as turkey tastes better on Thanksgiving after a victory on the gridiron, so too does the “roast beast” on Christmas after a win on the ice.

Archbishop Williams Bishops (1-1-1, getting votes in Division I) welcomed in the Austin Prep Cougars (3-1-0, #4 in Division I) for a varsity hockey tilt on the eve of Christmas Eve. The Bishops got an early Christmas present with the return of senior forward Ryan Brady who made his impact immediately on the offensive end and battled with AP junior Nick Cafarelli.
