The Faculty is Failing the Missouri Protestors and Student Journalists

The current saga at the University of Missouri has taught us several things, not the least of which being that a mediocre football team threatening to strike has more power at a large state school than its president does.

That, I took as the good news. These athletes, who bring in millions of dollars to their schools every year, are of course unpaid, and restricted from working jobs by NCAA rules (and by the fact that their sport is essentially a full-time job, and there are only 24 hours in a day).

Missouri by itself brought in over $83 million in revenue last year, thanks to its inclusion in the SEC's television deals, and pooled revenue from the conference's bowl game and NCAA men's basketball tournament appearances.

Basically, if these kids can't get any slice of that pie, then at least they could flex their collective muscle and enact social change on their campus.

In case you hadn't heard, ESPN college football analyst and former Georgia Bulldog David Pollack began a statement on College Gamdeday Saturday with "now I'm gonna stick my foot in my mouth, probably."

Yeah, when you start a sentence like that, the next thing out of your mouth should probably be, "you know what, never mind."

Pollack was beginning to voice his displeasure with former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice being appointed to the College Football Playoff Committee, and getting a vote to determine which four teams will play for a national championship each year.

He continued to say that he wanted members of the committee to have played football, be able to break down game tape and know more about the teams than just what's on paper. Host Chris Fowler, sensing what Pollack was trying to say, asked him bluntly, "so, no woman belongs on the committee?"

Pollack's response: "You said that."

Look, a win is a win, and I'm just as guilty of saying "the U is back" as the next guy, but the Hurricanes didn't beat Florida two weekends ago. Florida beat Florida, as five turnovers and 10 penalties led to the Gators losing a game that saw them outgain the Canes by over 200 yards and possess the ball 17 minutes longer.

Luckily for the Gators, it seems like every time they need a wake up call, they get a bye, or they get to play Tennessee/Kentucky. Well, rest easy Gator fans, because after that ugly loss to Miami, your team gets a bye, followed by a home game against the Vols (A team that hasn't beaten Florida since 2004), and a trip to Lexington to play the Wildcats (A team that hasn't beaten Florida since the Cretaceous Period).
