Cole McCubrey Fulfills D1 Dream, Signs With UMass

Winter weather tore through Central Massachusetts Tuesday night, canceling and postponing a number of sporting events across the Heart of the Commonwealth, but there was a silver lining.

Thanks to the West Boylston at Tahanto basketball game getting pushed back to Wednesday, Cole McCubrey, the star of the West Boylston/Tahanto co-op football team, was able to celebrate his commitment to play football at UMass in front of students from both schools he's represented the last four years.

West Boylston Outlasts Littleton 44-36 in Overtime

The Lions and Tigers graced us with one of the most exciting high school games of the season Saturday evening. Late lead changes and a heart stopping fourth quarter brought us to overtime, where West Boylston would ultimately claim victory by a final of 44-36.

Grafton Leaves No Doubt Against West Boylston

West Boylston took a trip to Grafton High School Friday night to face off against the out-of-conference Indians. Grafton would take an early lead that it wouldn’t relinquish, cruising to a 37-6 victory.

Familiarity

As big a game as this was for players, the coaches wanted to give a little extra push this week. West Boylston coach Mike Ross coached Grafton for years, winning a Super Bowl in 2012, and he hasn't been forgotten in Grafton.

“Both coaches were fired up this week,” said Grafton star and Syracuse commit Ifeatu Melifonwu, whose brother Obi, now at UConn, played for Ross at Grafton.

“Coaches were really hyping up the game all week,” added defensive end Sean Deely. “It felt good to beat Coach Ross.”

Saturday was a fantastic day for high school football in Central Massachusetts, as four Super Bowl champs were crowned in Worcester and Leominster. Those four CMass champs will now move onto the state semifinals next week, and are each just one step away from Gillette Stadium.

But it wasn't just about the winners, as several teams and players acquitted themselves very well in defeat.

Let's take a look back at the weekend that was.

Ed. Note- Since we won't be updating our Power Rankings until after the state championship games on December 5th, we will instead bring you a weekly review of Central Mass high school football.

The first weekend of the Central Mass high school football playoffs has come and gone, and we were treated to some shocking upsets, thrilling finishes, and break-out stars across the region.

Throw your expectations out the window, because top seeds and lower seeds went 4-4 against each other in the eight playoff games, including upsets in both Division 4 semifinals.

These past few days also brought us some intriguing non-playoff match ups that pitted up-and-coming programs against established powers, with bragging rights and momentum on the line.

Let's take a quick look back at the weekend that was.
