Central Mass Lacrosse Playoff Race Update: 5/24/17

It seemed improbable a few weeks ago, but Algonquin can actually qualify for the tournament today. Rival Shrewsbury will again stand in the Tomahawks' way.

We've reached the final two days of the regular season, and four Central Mass lacrosse teams are still fighting for their tournament lives. We will know by the end of the day who is in and who is out, but here's a look at the race in every section, with all the games you should keep your eye on this afternoon.

Division 2 Central/West

Already In (6): Nashoba, St. John's, Shepherd Hill, Shrewsbury, Tantasqua, Wachusett

Almost There (0):

On the Bubble (3): Algonquin (7-10), Marlboro (8-9),  North Middlesex (7-10)

Eliminated (4):
Fitchburg, Leominster, Westboro, Worcester

Key Game(s): Shrewsbury at Algonquin, today at 5:30 pm; North Middlesex at Oakmont, today at 3:30 pm; Shepherd Hill at Marlboro, today at 7 pm

There is still, somehow, much to be determined in D2 C/W, and we could see a pair of teams with losing records qualify for the tournament, by virtue of them finishing in the Top-2 of their respective leagues. Algonquin sits at 4-3 in Mid-Wach A play, and can tie Groton-Dunstable for second place if the T-Hawks can hand Shrewsbury its first league loss today in Northboro.

North Middlesex, meanwhile, is already tied for first in Mid-Wach C with a 7-2 league record, and can clinch at least a share of the league title with a win at Oakmont this afternoon. In fact, the Patriots can even win the league outright if Lunenberg upsets Bromfield today as well.

Finally, things are pretty simple for Marlboro- Win, and you're in. Well, simple in concept, but it won't be easy on the field against a very good Shepherd Hill team playing for tournament positioning.

Division 3 Central/West

Already In (7): Assabet, Blackstone Valley Tech, Grafton, Monty Tech, Nipmuc, Nashoba Valley Tech, St. Bernard's

Almost There (0):

On the Bubble (0):

Eliminated (4):
Advanced Math & Science Academy, Auburn, Northbridge, St. Peter-Marian

Key Game(s): Nipmuc at Hopedale, Thursday at 3:30 pm

The field is all set from Central Mass in D3 C/W, but now it's about battling for positioning. Nipmuc has a chance to score another nice win against a tournament team tomorrow afternoon at Hopedale. The only new addition to the field is Assabet, who gets in on the back of yesterday's big win over Blackstone Valley Tech.

Division 3 Central/East

Already In (6): Bromfield, Groton-Dunstable, Hopedale, Littleton, Oakmont, Tyngsboro

Almost There (1): Lunenburg (9-9)

On the Bubble (0):

Eliminated (1):
Hudson

Key Game(s): Lunenburg at Bromfield, today at 4 pm

It's do or die for the Blue Knights, who need to upset the Spartans to qualify for the tournament. Bromfield won the previous meeting between these two teams by a final score of 12-4, and the Spartans can clinch a share of the Mid-Wach C crown with a win today.
