Austin Prep tops Ipswich for First Ever Sectional Crown

Woburn, Mass. -- It was a night for history at Woburn High, as the Austin Prep boys lacrosse team rolled to its first ever sectional crown, knocking off defending state champion Ipswich 13-7 to win the Division 3 North title.

The Cougars jumped the Tigers from the start, racing out to a 4-0 lead and never looking back.

Austin Prep won thanks to its diverse, relentless offense. Five different Cougars scored led by four goals each from freshman Zach Barden and sophomore Michael Chabra. Chabra also had a pair of assists.

Everett Pulls Away from Xaverian for Back-to-Back Division 1 Titles

FOXBOROUGH - For Everett, Saturday night was a perfect ending to a perfect season.

Jake Willcox threw for 185 and two touchdowns while Anthony Norcia compiled 124 yards receiving as Everett defeated Xaverian, 35-10, to win the Division 1 Super Bowl at Gillette Stadium.

The Crimson Tide (12-0) went into the half holding their smallest halftime lead of the season at 14-10.

As it did all season long, Everett, in the blink of an eye, left its opponent in the dust.

Xs & Os: Everett Uses "Sluggo" to Pull Away from Xaverian

FOXBOROUGH - For the first time this season, Everett failed to go into the half with a double-digit lead.

Early on in Saturday night's Division 1 state championship game at Gillette Stadium, Xaverian did a great job of running the ball, keeping Jake Willcox and the explosive Crimson Tide offense off the field for much of the first half.

Mashpee Outlasts Blackstone Valley Tech for Third Straight State Championship

FOXBOROUGH -Matt Triveri’s tenure at Mashpee High has been marked by transcendent running back production year-in and year-out. And, while he’s still got another year with a pretty good one in Devaun Ford, the coach didn’t hesitate to put him in the ranks with past legends.

“He’s right up there with Jordan [Keli’inui], DeShaun [Dias], Jared Taylor,” Triveri said of his workhorse back, who worked through some early injury to finish with a game-high 24 carries for 177 yards and a touchdown, and added three catches for 45 yards and another score in the Falcons’ 22-16 win over Blackstone Valley Tech. The win handed Mashpee the MIAA Division 7 State Championship at Gillette Stadium, the program's third state championship in a row.

“All those guys, he’s right there… He’s one of the smartest we’ve ever had here. He just gets it. He’s a complete player.”

The Falcons have now won three straight state-wide titles at Gillette Stadium, and four Super Bowls in the past seven seasons, dating back to Jared Taylor’s epic 308-yard masterpiece in their Division 4A Super Bowl rout of Cardinal Spellman in 2011.

But before Mashpee could bask in the luster of more championship hardware, and before Ford could permeate himself in the annals of the school’s all-time greats, the Falcons had to hold on for dear life.

Dennis-Yarmouth Rolls Past West Springfield for Division 5 State Championship

FOXBOROUGH - Dennis-Yarmouth quarterback Jacob McCarthy grew up as part of The Lagoon. Now, as a senior, he has brought them home a title.

McCarthy went 14-of-22 for 167 yards and two touchdowns as the Dolphins defeated West Springfield, 37-7, to claim the Division 5 Super Bowl title on Saturday afternoon at Gillette Stadium.

Dolphins two-way sensation Bobby Evans totaled three touchdowns, two on the ground and one via a 29-yard pick-six.

While residing in Division 5, the Dolphins certainly looked like a Top 10-team statewide all season long. The win on Saturday capped off a perfect 13-0 season in which Dennis-Yarmouth outscored its opponents by a staggering 523-146 mark.

McCarthy reflected on being a part of the Dolphins notorious fan section, the Lagoon, when D-Y won their last Super Bowl in 2011, only to now raise a banner a senior captain.

Middleboro Runs Away from Littleton to Capture D6 State Championship

Middleboro captured the D6 state title, and celebrated late assistant coach and teacher Scott Nelson with his old high school number 57 on a special Sachem jersey.

FOXBOROUGH - There was nothing about Littleton that proved a conundrum to Middleboro. The Sachems took the Tigers' best punches early, but dished a considerable amount more during Saturday's 43-20 victory in the MIAA Division 6 state championship at Gillette Stadium.

Middleboro (10-3) earned its first state title since 1983, and fourth in school history as the Sachems put on an offensive clinic at the expense of Littleton (11-1).

Baker's Kick Lifts King Philip to Second Straight Title Against Lincoln-Sudbury

FOXBOROUGH -King Philip knew the game’s tense final moments would end in euphoria. After all, it was playing out eerily similar to other rock fights they had encountered along the improbable streak.

With less than two minutes to go, Cole Baker drilled a go-ahead 30-yard field to give King Philip a three-point lead. On Lincoln-Sudbury’s ensuing drive, KP’s secondary broke up a pair of passes, the last of which came courtesy of captains Shane Frommer and Andrew Dittrich, as King Philip defeated L-S, 10-7, in the Division 2 Super Bowl on Friday night at Gillette Stadium.

The win gives King Philip back-to-back championships and improves their winning streak to 25 games heading into next season.

St. John's (Shrewsbury) Hangs on for D3 State Championship Against North Attleboro

FOXBOROUGH - No huddle, no problem.

The St. John’s (Shrewsbury) Pioneers ran their high octane no-huddle offense to near perfection, which was just enough to outlast the North Attleboro Red Rocketeers, 35-33, to claim the Division 3 State Championship on Friday night.

The game had a distinctly Big 12 feel, particularly early on when the teams traded touchdowns throughout the first half. In the end, St. John’s kept its tempo up longer than North Attleboro, delivering the school its first Super Bowl title since 2010, and first championship in the new state-wide tournament.

Middleboro Hoping to "Win One for Nelly" this Saturday at Gillette

As they have all season, the Sachems will wear a sticker bearing longtime coach and teacher Scott Nelson's high school number of 57 when they take the field at Gillette.

Middleboro, Mass. - When the Middleboro Sachems (9-3) football team returned to the field for practices this past summer, there was a notable absence for the first time since 1981.

Lifelong Middleboro resident and proud Sachem, Scott Nelson, 59, passed away suddenly in June, just weeks after retiring from his positions as both a teacher and coach at Middleboro High School. The man referred to as “Nelly” by those close to him was not only the head of the science department, but also coached football, basketball, and softball at MHS.

Nelly worked under Middleboro Head Football Coach Pat Kingman as a receivers coach, and left an endearing mark on the program.

Four Teams Face the Challenge of Repeating as State Champions This Weekend

For seniors playing their final high school game, there is no better feeling.

The Gatorade shower they provide to their coach, the trophy they are presented, and finally the Super Bowl rings they are given in the spring all cap off a memorable four-year career.

While those seniors head off their separate ways in the fall, those that followed their leadership are hoping for something better.

The juniors, sophomores, and even freshman that were too an integral part of that Super Bowl run, now are on the road to solidifying that the championship was not a one-off event. Rather, that it was just the beginning of a program putting itself firmly on the MIAA football landscape.

There may be no more challenging feat to accomplish in high school sports than repeating as state champions.

Over the course of one season any team, a favorite or perhaps even a sleeper, may emerge talented and experienced enough for one shot at a state championship.

Come the next season, however, they no longer fly under the radar, and now carry a much bolder title next to their school name – "Defending state champion."

No longer are they a team to beat simply because of the conference they play in, or their history as a program, but because they own something that everyone else wants.

They are guaranteed to get everyone’s best shot.

Previewing the MIAA State Football Championships: Divisions 4 & 7

Division 4 Super Bowl

Nashoba (10-1) vs Melrose (12-0), 11 am

The second game to kickoff in Foxboro Saturday pits the Nashoba Chieftains out of the D4 Central bracket against the Melrose Red Raiders, who will be representing the North.

With no Division 4 West region, one sectional champion from the Division 4 ranks receives a bye each year. This season, it was the Central’s turn, and Nashoba likely needed all the rest it could get after a thrilling 21-19 overtime victory over Marlboro in the regional final.

The Chieftains are back at Gillette following a one-year absence, making their return to a stadium where they won the old Division 2 Super Bowl in 2015. With 16 seniors on the roster, several players have experienced being on the hallowed turf in Foxboro.

King Philip is headed back to Gillette, but can the Warriors repeat as state champions against an explosive Lincoln-Sudbury team?

Two weeks ago, high school football fans across Massachusetts welcomed the exciting news that all eight Super Bowls would be played at Gillette Stadium.

Prior to the usual six-game slate on Saturday, a pair of contests would be played Friday night, giving fans of all schools the opportunity to see their team play at the home of the New England Patriots.

Those two Friday night games turned out to arguably be the top two games on the docket.

First up in the Division 3 state championship game is Central Mass champion St. John’s (Shrewsbury) against D3 South champ North Attleboro, two teams that have been explosive all season long.

In the night cap, it’s the Division 2 state title game, where defending champion King Philip will look to cap off its second consecutive undefeated season against Lincoln-Sudbury, a squad that hopes to hand longtime coach Tom Lopez his first Super Bowl win since 1989.

Before we preview a loaded Saturday slate of Super Bowl matchups, lets take a look at those two Friday night affairs.

St. John's (Shrewsbury) Tops Springfield Central in Shootout for Trip to Gillette

Worcester, Mass. - St. John’s (Shrewsbury) quarterback Steve Bucciaglia soaked it in for a while. Who could blame him, he had just led his team to Gillette Stadium.

On Saturday afternoon, Bucciaglia was the fulcrum of an explosive Pioneer offense, completing 23-of-28 passes for 230 yards and 3 touchdowns as St. John’s Shrewsbury defeated Springfield Central, 52-33, at Foley Stadium.

With the win, St. John’s (11-0) advances to the Div. 3 Super Bowl at Gillette Stadium versus North Attleboro.

Mashpee Rides Ford Past St. Mary's (Lynn) for Spot in D7 State Final

Braintree, Mass. - The Mashpee High football team is off to the Super Bowl, again.

The Falcons secured their third straight trip to the state championship game with a 28-20 victory over St. Mary’s (Lynn) in the Div. 7 state semifinals.

“It feels tremendous,” Mashpee head coach Matt Triveri said of going back to the Gillette Stadium.

Mashpee will square off against Blackstone Valley Tech (11-0) in the Div. 7 Super Bowl on Friday, Dec. 1, at Gillette Stadium.
