It was a wild first night of the MIAA football championships, as St. John's (Shrewsbury) edged North Attleboro in a thrilling shootout for the D3 state championship, and King Philip won a slugfest against Lincoln-Sudbury in the D2 Super Bowl.

St. John's (Shrewsbury) Hangs on for D3 State Championship Against North Attleboro

FOXBOROUGH - No huddle, no problem.

The St. John’s (Shrewsbury) Pioneers ran their high octane no-huddle offense to near perfection, which was just enough to outlast the North Attleboro Red Rocketeers, 35-33, to claim the Division 3 State Championship on Friday night.

The game had a distinctly Big 12 feel, particularly early on when the teams traded touchdowns throughout the first half. In the end, St. John’s kept its tempo up longer than North Attleboro, delivering the school its first Super Bowl title since 2010, and first championship in the new state-wide tournament.

Previewing the MIAA State Football Championships: Divisions 2 & 3

King Philip is headed back to Gillette, but can the Warriors repeat as state champions against an explosive Lincoln-Sudbury team?

Two weeks ago, high school football fans across Massachusetts welcomed the exciting news that all eight Super Bowls would be played at Gillette Stadium.

Prior to the usual six-game slate on Saturday, a pair of contests would be played Friday night, giving fans of all schools the opportunity to see their team play at the home of the New England Patriots.

Those two Friday night games turned out to arguably be the top two games on the docket.

First up in the Division 3 state championship game is Central Mass champion St. John’s (Shrewsbury) against D3 South champ North Attleboro, two teams that have been explosive all season long.

In the night cap, it’s the Division 2 state title game, where defending champion King Philip will look to cap off its second consecutive undefeated season against Lincoln-Sudbury, a squad that hopes to hand longtime coach Tom Lopez his first Super Bowl win since 1989.

Before we preview a loaded Saturday slate of Super Bowl matchups, lets take a look at those two Friday night affairs.

North Attleboro Throttles Duxbury in D3 South Final

NORTH ATTLEBORO — Back-to-back years of playoff frustration at the hands of Duxbury melted away for the North Attleboro Red Rocketeers on Friday night, as they romped the third-seeded Dragons, 35-0, in the Division 3 South title game.

More aptly, North Attleboro (9-1) put a deep freeze on Duxbury (8-2) – temperatures were in the 20s at kickoff – thanks to a prolific running attack and timely passing game.

King Phillip Tops North Attleboro in Crossover Hockomock Clash

WRENTHAM - One year after being the staples of a Division 1A state title run, the tandem of Brendan Lydon and Shane Frommer proved they have not missed a beat.

Behind a pair of touchdown passes from Lydon, and a game-clinching 57-yard touchdown run from Frommer, King Philip held on for a 24-14 win over North Attleboro in a Hockomock League crossover matchup at King Philip Regional High School on Friday night.

The win is King Philip’s 14th consecutive victory, dating back to Thanksgiving Day in 2015.

Duxbury Beats North Attleborough On Record Night

Duxbury bested North Attleborough while Bobby Maimaron broke the MIAA state record for career TD passes

DUXBURY, Mass. — The statewide record book received a minor edit on Friday night but other than that, it was a normal night for the Duxbury High football team.

Quarterback Bobby Maimaron took sole possession of the Massachusetts high school football touchdown passing record. 

He did so as his top-seeded Dragons (10-0) stayed undefeated by besting the No. 3 North Attleborough Rocketeers (8-2), 26-19, at home in the Division 2 South title game.
