Plymouth South Hockey tops Medfield to Make First Ever State Championship Game

Buzzards Bay, Mass. - When a trip to any championship is on the line, play makers tend to make plays.

So it should be of little surprise that Sean Colbert, captain of the third-seededed Plymouth South Panthers, scored with just 2:02 left in regulation to give his team some breathing room over the No. 8 Medfield Warriors.

The goal for the senior, who’s racked up well north of 150 points in his career, amounted to the game-winner, as the Panthers punched their ticket to the TD Garden for the first time in program history with a 6-3 win in the Division 2 South final on Sunday.

Canton skated away from Medfield 2-0, while Coyle Cassidy won a 3-2 overtime thriller over Boston Latin to each advance to the championship of the 6th Annual Joe Quinn Tournament.

Medfield Rallies Back to Stun Walpole in Division 2 Central/East Final

ASHLAND, Mass. – It’s about how you start – and finish.

After getting off to a hot start in the first quarter, the Medfield Warriors battled back from a five goal deficit to upend top seeded Walpole Warriors 13-12 in overtime to face Longmeadow in the Division 2 State Semi-final.

Medfield (15-6) senior, Jack Cahill completed the comeback and the upset with the game winner coming with 2:49 left in overtime.

Hot Start Helps Medfield Lacrosse Top Westwood for Spot in D2 C/E Final

MEDFIELD - Once again, the Medfield Warriors are one win away from capturing the Division 2 Central/East crown.

The second-seeded Warriors (14-6) have won the bracket each year since its inception in 2014, and after a 13-8 win over the sixth-seeded Westwood Wolverines (13-8) on Wednesday afternoon, Medfield will have yet another shot at the hardware this weekend.

If the Warriors are to take down the top-seeded Walpole Rebels (19-1), they’re going to have to resist the urge to take their foot off the gas at any point. Wednesday, after building a 13-4 lead against Westwood, Medfield turned lackadaisical, allowing the Wolverines to score the final four goals of the contest.

Count Warrior head coach John Isaf as a believer that his team is capable of avoiding such a mistake again.

MEDFIELD, Mass. -- The lights shut off in the first quarter of Tuesday's meeting between Medfield and Dover-Sherborn. As they returned to full power, Jack Cahill lit up the night.

The Medfield senior exploded for two goals and four assists in the second half to power the Warriors to a convincing 14-8 win over their Tri Valley League rivals in the first ever Bruce Lerch Game of the Month. The highly-anticipated game benefited the Bruce Lerch Scholarship Fund, founded in honor of the late, great local sports reporter, who covered high school lacrosse for the Boston Herald and BostonLax.

There is no more consistent program in Massachusetts lacrosse than Medfield. The three-time reigning Division 2 state champions have made high-level play on the field their calling card under head coach John Isaf.

This year the Warriors will, once again, be among those at the front of the D2 field in the quest to lift the trophy at Boston University, but Isaf is firmly planted in the present, as he will put together a team that lost three Division 1 talents last season- Kevin McCordic, Jack-Henry Vara, and John Maclean, as well as scorer Matt Trieber (Tufts) and starting goalie Kyle Gately (Hamilton).

“Number one, we’re not state champ,” Isaf said. “It’s 2017 and this team hasn’t done anything yet. We really don’t look at ourselves as state champs. This is a new team and a new season. We’re in pursuit, and we’re pursuing being the best team we can be. We have some good talent coming back.”

Hanover Boys Hoops Rolls Past Medfield

HANOVER, Mass. - The Hanover Indians boys basketball team dismantled the Medfield Big Blue 64-43 Tuesday evening in the opening round of the 2016 Edward M. Amaral Memorial Tournament.

The Indians (5-1), fresh off a 52-49 win at the buzzer over Whitman-Hanson last Thursday, never trailed, and led by 23 late in the fourth quarter en route to victory.

Mendes Pushes Marlborough Past Medfield in Semifinal Thriller

Mendes paced the Panthers with 25 points and added 4 steals and 4 blocks. Marlborough will play Concord-Carlisle in the MIAA Division 2 Central final on Sunday at Fitchburg State University.

The Marlborough Panthers outlasted the Medfield Big Blue, 59-58, in the MIAA Division 2 Central Mass semifinal at Worcester Polytechnic Institute on Sunday.

Joao Mendes provided the offensive and defensive spark for Marlborough (18-4), pacing the Panthers with 25 points.

“He’s always been a good offensive player.” Marlborough head coach Bryan Riley said of the senior Mendes. “He made a few shots early and stayed hot for the rest of the game.”

After pulling off a thrilling upset against cross-town rival St. John's in the Division 2 Central/West semifinals and capturing the program's first ever district crown days later against Westfield, Shrewsbury simply didn't have enough to top Medfield in the state semis, falling 14-1.
