A Super 8 for Every Sport? Girls' Lax & Closing the Book on Spring Sports

With Saturday's MIAA state championship marathon, spring sports, and the 2016-2017 HS sports year, came to a close. It was an interesting spring, to be sure, and here are a few wandering thoughts I've had as we close the book on this season.

The Super 8-ification of MIAA Sports

The Super 8 is great. I know this, you know this, we all know this. It's worked tremendously well for hockey, and the last few years have proven that it works very well for baseball as well.

As far as crowning a "true state champion," there are few better ways to do it. It seems inevitable that we will soon hear rumblings about a Super 8 for darn near every sport, and in most cases, I wouldn't object.

Cohasset Girls Lax Tops Newburyport for Spot in D2 Final

WELLESLEY – The Cohasset Skippers scored two goals in the first 49 seconds and did not look back as they cruised to an 11-4 victory over Newburyport, ending the Clippers' perfect season and advancing to the MIAA girls’ lacrosse Division 2 finals.

The Skippers (20-2) were led by junior midfielder Elle Hansen, who scored five goals for Cohasset in the win.

Postgame Blog: Bromfield Girls' Lax Tops Grafton in Battle of Familiar Foes

GRAFTON - No. 2 seed Grafton played host to 7th-seeded Bromfield Saturday.

A hard fought battle by two very familiar rivals would end up with Bromfield walking off the field victorious, hanging on to win 11-8.

The Indians and Trojans took the field fired up today. Both teams were very boisterous and excited for a shot at each other in the playoffs. It’s almost become a tradition for these teams. After a first half of back-and-forth scoring, Bromfield put on a little run, giving the Spartans a comfortable 11-5 lead.

Starting with about 7 minutes left on the clock, however, Grafton found its own rhythm. Scoring 3 unanswered, the Indians looked poised to make a comeback.
