MIAA Basketball Top 25: Preseason Poll

 Our (sorta) preseason rankings of the best teams in the state, as selected by our panel of staff writers and correspondents. (Updated 12/11)

1. St. John's Prep (Last Season: 16-6) With a 6-foot-8 center in Tommy O’Neil and an elite wing in 6-foot-3 Nate Hobbs, the Eagles have the weaponry necessary to make a run at a Catholic Conference title and potentially a state championship.  

2. Newton North (Record Last Season: 17-7) Prized prospect Ethan Wright decided to stay at Newton North and he’ll have a lot more help this year, with young talents Noah Neville and Aaron Cooley ready to step up in supporting roles.   

3. Needham (Last Season: 20-5) Thomas Shaughnessy returns after putting on a show in the state tournament last winter, leading the Rockets to their first sectional title and competing valiantly against eventual champion Cambridge in the state semifinals.

1. Everett (2-0; Last Week – 1 ) No issues for the Crimson Tide this week, as they rolled Leominster 33-7 to extend their winning streak.

2. BC High (2-0; Last Week – 2 ) Eagles survived their first big test of the season, edging Marshfield, 19-7, at home behind a potent ground attack led by quarterback Will Bowen and running back Danny Abraham.

In exactly two weeks, the MIAA Division 1A “Super Eight” committee will gather at  MIAA headquarters in Franklin to vote on who the best eight high school baseball teams in Massachusetts are.

Despite the overall uncooperative weather this spring, the Super Eight picture has slowly started to take shape, with many teams starting to make their case as the regular season begins to slowly wind down. So, without a further ado, SuiteSports is excited to unveil its first Super Eight Projection, which we will be updated every Monday until selection day on May 29th (so, basically just next Monday).

1. St. John’s (Shrewsbury) (12-2; Last Ranking: 1) After losing in an extra innings marathon at Xaverian, the Pioneers beat three good teams with a 40-1 run differential.

2. Central Catholic (12-2; Last Ranking: 7) Going 10-1 in the minefield that is the Merrimack Valley Conference is extremely impressive. With Sam Lara and Steve Hajjar leading this staff, the Raiders appear to be Super 8 bound.

Our rankings of the best teams in the state during the 2017 baseball season, as selected by our panel of staff writers and correspondents. (Updated 5/1)

1. St. John’s (Shrewsbury) (8-1; Last Ranking: 2) Only blemish to the Pioneers strong start is a 6-5 loss at Nashoba. They have the pitching and hitting necessary to make another run into the MIAA Division 1A Super 8 Tournament.

2. St. John’s Prep (8-2; Last Ranking - 1) Eagles wound up on the wrong side of a slugfest, suffering an 11-8 loss to conference rival Catholic Memorial.

3. Braintree (7-1; Last Ranking: 3) The Wamps took down BC High at Monan Park to conclude the Challenge to Cure ALS Tournament, and have now won six straight since losing at Brookline on April 6.

Previewing the MIAA Boys' Hoops D2 Sectional Finals

We're getting down to the nitty gritty of the MIAA boys' basketball tournament, and the next few days will see sectional championship games played across all 16 sections.

But let's not get ahead of ourselves with all that. Here's our preview of the four sectional finals in Division 2. If you would like to read our Division 1 sectional final previews, you can find them here.

MIAA Top 25 Boys Basketball Poll: 1/30/17

1. Cambridge (12-0; Last Ranking  –  1): Only one game for the defending champions this week and they handled Westford Academy, 75-39, to remain undefeated on the year.

2. BC High (14-0; Last Ranking  –  2):  Carl Pierre and Travis Evee continue to lead the Eagles on an impressive run through a loaded schedule, and they’ll need to be at their best with four straight conference games coming up, beginning with a trip to Malden Catholic on Tuesday.

1. Cambridge (11-0; Last Ranking  –  1): The Falcons returned from a triumphant trip to Springfield and promptly steamrolled conference opponents Waltham and Lincoln-Sudbury

2. BC High (12-0; Last Ranking  –  2):  Pushed to the brink in a narrow overtime win at St. John’s Prep last Friday, the Eagles maintained their undefeated season with a hard-fought 12^th win.
