Tech Boston Runs Away from Taconic for D2 Crown

Springfield, Mass. - “Defense wins championships” is one of the oldest sports clichés in the book, but for the Tech Boston Bears, it still rings true. The Bears employed a ferocious defense to stifle the Taconic Braves, en route to a resounding 78-40 win in the Division 2 State Championship, the first title in program history.

“It starts with defense and it ends with defense,” said Tech Boston head coach Johnny Lee Williams.

For Taconic (17-8), the Tech Boston (25-1) defense was unlike any they had seen all year, as the Bears forced 34 Braves turnovers.

The MIAA Basketball season will conclude in Springfield on Saturday with a total of eight state championship games.

Over at the Mass Mutual Center, the Division 1 and 2 Boys' and Girls' state finals will commence, while across the way at Springfield College the Division 3 and 4 games will take place.

SuiteSports' will have complete coverage from both venues, but before then, let's break down each of the four divisions.

Korte's Monster Night, Dew-Hollis' Breakout Second Half Send Watertown and Tech Boston to the State Final

John Korte jogged into the locker room clapping his hands while his teammates responded with a rousing ovation. The sleepers were wide-awake.

On Wednesday night, Korte scored 28 points, corralled 10 rebounds, and totaled five blocks to lead Watertown past Burke, 66-61, in the Division 3 State Semi-Finals at Burlington High School.

The Raiders, who entered as the No. 7 Seed in Division 4 North, are now just one away from their third state championship since 2007.

MIAA Boys' Basketball State Tournament: Division 2 State Semi-Final Previews

Four teams punched their ticket to the state finals on Monday. In Division 1, Mansfield continued its blistering postseason run over Everett, while Franklin disposed of previously undefeated Springfield Central to reach the state title game for a second straight year.

In Division 4, meanwhile, Pope John went on a late 11-2 run to take down Mashpee, while Maynard outlasted Pioneer Valley. 

Today, eight more teams will look to solidify a trip to Springfield with the Division 2 and 3 State Semi-Finals taking place later on today.

Tech Boston Clinches Spot at TD Garden with Route of Hingham

Taunton, Mass. - Playing on the iconic TD Garden parquet floor is something every high school basketball player in the Massachusetts dreams of doing.

On Saturday, the winner of the division 2 South sectional final between Tech Boston and Hingham would get a chance to live out that dream. Tech Boston made it clear right from start of the contest that it would be the team to play at the TD Garden, defeating Hingham soundly by a score of 69-44.

“I’m so happy for these kids, I’m happy for Dorchester, I’m happy for inner city kids in Boston," Tech Boston coach Johnny Williams said. "It proves to you that they are capable kids, and if you hold them to high standards, they will perform.

"We never coddled them, we never dumbed it down, our expectations are at the highest level, and they always step up to the challenge.”

1. Brockton (13-0; Last Week - 2) We have a changing of the guard at the top as the Boxers defeated Cambridge before going on the road to defeat Bridgewater-Raynham to remain unbeaten. Brockton will be instantly tested this week when they head to Durfee before hosting Newton North.

MLK Invitational Recap: Tech Boston Works for Statement Win, McDonnell Gets CM Back on Track

BOSTON - It took only three possessions for Tech Boston to make the biggest statement of the day at the MLK Invitational.

Trailing No. 8 BC High 60-59 with three minutes left, No. 4 Tech Boston went on an 8-0 run, highlighted by a pair of steals from Maurice Works and two baskets by Walter-Dew Hollis, to sprint past the Eagles 74-68 on Sunday night at the Cabot Center on the campus of Northeastern University.

Works led all scorers with 26 points and was given the game’s Most Valuable Player award.

BOSTON -  There is always something special about watching a Boston City League boys’ basketball game, and at Latin Academy in the Division 2 South quarterfinals, this proved to be true once again.

On a Friday night where a second quarter surge from fifth-seeded O’Bryant (17-6) certainly helped them to their 88-76 victory over fourth-seed TechBoston, it was the play of Eighth-grade point guard Dasonte Bowen that won the game.

BOSTON  - Talent has never been an issue for the Brighton Bengals over the past few seasons, but they’ve fallen just short of city glory with losses in the Boston City League tournament each of the last two years. 

Yet with old rival New Mission dispatched by upstart Tech Boston in the semifinals, the path was clear for Brighton (17-5) to finally return to the top of their conference, and the Bengals did not miss their opportunity, as they blew past the Bears for a 76-64 victory on Thursday evening at Madison Park High. 

“It feels great,” Brighton head coach Hugh Coleman said about the win. “We have a ton of juniors and seniors and this group has basically been together for three years. Last year we came up short, but this year, they’ve shown how much they’ve improved. It felt good or our seniors to go out this way because I’ve felt it was a few years in the making.”

DORCHESTER, Mass. - With so much parity in the Boston City League this season, it can be difficult to separate the cream of the crop.

Yet the Brighton Bengals proved to be a notch above the competition in a resounding 72-40 victory at Tech Boston Academy on Wednesday evening.
