Waltham Skates Away from Marshfield for Boys' D1 State Championship

BOSTON -Half of the members of the Waltham Hawks weren’t even alive the last time the school won a state championship in hockey in 2002, but that didn’t stop head coach John Maguire from breaking out every possible reminder of the past along the way for the current group.

Relishing the past created the perfect present for Waltham, which skated away from the Marshfield Rams for a 4-1 win in the Division 1 State Championship game on Sunday night at TD Garden.

The Hawks (18-5-2) never trailed against the Rams (15-7-5), leaving the rest up to goaltender Kyle Penton. The senior netminder ended his career with a bang, turning aside 33 of the 34 Marshfield shots flung in his direction.

Higgins Stands Tall for Barnstable Hockey against Franklin; Marshfield Tops Duxbury

Buzzards Bay, Mass. — Conor Higgins put together about as solid a freshman season as the Barnstable Red Raiders could have hoped for from their goaltender.

Higgins posted a very respectable 2.36 goals against average, and an .855 save percentage, picking up one shutout during his first year on the varsity. His shutout was an impressive one, against the defending Division 3 State Champion Old Rochester/Fairhaven Bulldogs, but that was in December.

How would he fare against a high-flying Franklin Panthers team that put up 80 goals – sixth most in Division 1 – in the regular season?

Pretty darn well, it turns out. Higgins turned aside all 32 shots he faced to help a Ryan DiPilato first period goal stand up as No. 14 Barnstable (10-8-3) stunned No. 3 Franklin, 1-0, on Wednesday night.

Marshfield Captures ACL Title Against Falmouth

Marshfield, Mass. - For Marshfield boys basketball, revenge is a dish best served with an Atlantic Coast League regular season championship on the side.

The Rams (13-2, 7-1) hosted the Falmouth Clippers (15-4, 6-2) in a rematch of a game that the Clippers won, 59-50, at home versus the Rams on January 12th of this year. This time however, it was Marshfield that enjoyed its home-court advantage, en route to a 66-48 victory for the ACL regular season title.

“Nobody believed in this group,” Rams head coach Bob Fisher said, as his eyes welled up. “Yet he we are, champions.”

Mansfield Rolls Marshfield in Crucial 4/5 D2 South Matchup

MANSFIELD--For three consecutive postseasons, the Marshfield Rams played the thorn in the side of the Mansfield Hornets.

Marshfield blew out Mansfield in both the 2014 and 2015 postseasons and managed to squeak by in a third straight playoff game a year ago. But the Rams’ run of dominance over the Hornets is a thing of the past as Mansfield can turn its attention to another longtime nemesis next week after a 34-14 dismantling of Marshfield on Friday night.

Dennis-Yarmouth Overwhelms Marshfield for ACL Title

YARMOUTH - Anyone who was at "The Lagoon" on Friday night saw who the top team in the Atlantic Coast League is this season.

For the third straight year, there is a different ACL champion this season. The Marshfield Rams could not stop Dennis-Yarmouth's speedy and high-powered offense on Friday night. As a result, the Dolphins beat the Rams, 43-16, at home to improve to 6-0.

MARSHFIELD - The Falmouth High football team is no longer on a 17-game winning streak.

The Clippers, who went undefeated last season, had not lost a game since November 6, 2015... Until Friday night in Marshfield. The Marshfield Rams (2-1) snapped that win streak, as they controlled the trenches all day. The Rams came away with a 57-6 home win over their Atlantic Coast League opponent.

“Well, the kids just came to play today,” Rams head coach Lou Silva said. “From the third play on, they did a great job on both sides of the ball and with the kicking game. Everything came together tonight.”

BC High Rushing Attack Continues to Roll in Win Over Marshfield

BOSTON - Will Bowen put on a showcase to all in attendance that BC High has more to its identity than just Danny Abraham.

Bowen ran for 131 yards and a touchdown as part of a ground attack that included Abraham and Bobby DeMeo as the Eagles got past Division 2 power Marshfield, 19-7, on Friday night at Boston College High School.

The conditions were slick all evening long, with rain pouring down from the start of the game’s pre game festivities. The wet weather made throwing nearly impossible for both sides causing the teams to resort to their top level running games.

The No. 2 Eagles (2-0) got the better end of it, as the trio of Bowen, Abraham, and DeMeo combined to run for 220 yards on the evening.

MIAA Football Camp Road Trip: The Marshfield Rams

MARSHFIELD - It’s hard to improve offensively a year after averaging 37 points per game, but the Marshfield High football team may be in a position to do just that this season.

The Rams went 8-3 and made it to the Division 1A South semifinals last year and, while they graduated a handful of their top defensive players (Neal Parry, Adam Briffett, Chris McLeod, Christian Friedel, Gavin Admirand, Chris White), the pieces of their signature Wing-T offense remain mostly intact. That said, Rams head coach Lou Silva, who is in his final year leading the Rams, is pleased with the amount of experience his team is returning.

Malden Catholic Leaves No Doubt in Super 8 Sweep of Marshfield

After shutting out Marshfield in game one of its Super 8 quarterfinal series, reigning Super 8 champion Malden Catholic made sure to keep its collective foot on the gas, scoring two goals in the game's first three minutes, then cruising to a dominant 7-0 victory.

Following the 2-0 series sweep, the Lancers now move on to the Super 8 semifinals to face Arlington.

LOWELL, Mass. - If anything is a sure thing it’s Malden Catholic winning its first round games in the Super 8.

The Lancers have never lost a first-round series since the tournament realigned in 2013, going 8-1 and outscoring their first-round opponents 33-13 during that stretch.

MC scored first and never looked back as it notched its ninth first-round Super 8 victory with a controlled 3-0 win over Marshfield in the fourth, and final, game of day one of the Super 8 at Tsongas Center.

Marshfield Scores 4 Unanswered Goals to Shock Austin Prep in Super 8 Play-in Game

NORTH BILLERICA, Mass. - With history staring it in the face, the Marshfield boys hockey team looked prime to give it all away.

After surrendering the first three goals of the game it looked like the Rams would fade into the cold February night with little to show for its first ever appearance in the Division 1A play-in round.

Instead, Marshfield buckled down and chopped down Austin Prep slowly but surely, walking out of Chelmsford Forum with a remarkable 4-3 comeback win. The Rams will be the eight seed in the proper Super 8 field, and will play Malden Catholic in the tournament’s opening round.

Arlington Hockey Edges Marshfield for Burns Tournament Title; Weymouth Tops Andover in Consolation Game

ARLINGTON, Mass. - It was a battle between two of the top public school programs in the state, and it did not disappoint.

Arlington and Marshfield went up and down for the full 45 minutes, but it was the host Spy Ponders that came out with a 3-2 win and the Ed Burns Tournament title.

With the game tied at two coming out of the second intermission, it was Arlington’s veteran core that provided the needed edge against the Rams. The Ponders took a three-on-two across the Marshfield blue line, then completed a tic-tac-toe play from Kevin Ouellette to Mic Curran to Sean Tomaszewski, who slid it home from the edge of the crease for the eventual game-winner.

King Phillip Bullies Marshfield in D2A South Semis

The score may not have shown it, but King Phillip dominated Marshfield physically Friday night.

WRENTHAM, Mass.- The King Philip Warriors used a punishing ground game and a dominant defense to defeat the Marshfield Rams 14-7 on Friday night. With the win, the Warriors advance to the Division 1A South sectional final.

The Warriors (9-0) will play the winner of the Bridgewater-Raynham/Wellesley game, which is being played on Saturday at 2:00 PM.

It was an odd week for high school football in the eastern portion of the Commonwealth. Unlike in Central Mass, where regional powers were returning to their former glory, a pair of EMass mainstays took tough losses, and may need to go back to the drawing board offensively.

Meanwhile, a trio of Division 3 teams are impressing, as Milton continues its hot start and both Tewksbury and North Attleborough make their debuts in our Power Rankings after big wins.

Much like our Central Mass Power Rankings, not much has changed at the top here in the eastern portion of the Commonwealth. But, there was some shakeup in the middle and at the bottom, as Andover shot themselves into the state-wide conversation with a win over BC High, and Holliston continues to climb thanks to an explosive offense.

Only a week in and there's already some shake up in our Eastern Mass poll. After big wins by Xaverian, St. John's Prep and BC High, the Catholic Conference threatens to put a stranglehold on our Top-10, but last week's top team was impressive as well.

Let's not waste any more time, here are this week's Power Rankings.
